Prevention is the foundation of excellent oral health. At Johns Creek Dental Associates, we provide comprehensive preventive dental care designed to keep your teeth and gums healthy, catch problems early when they’re easiest to treat, and help you avoid complex dental issues down the road. From routine cleanings to advanced diagnostic technology, our preventive approach protects your smile for life.
Preventive dentistry means more than just routine cleanings. It’s a long-term commitment to your oral health and overall well-being. Whether you’re here for regular checkups, diagnostic imaging, or protective treatments like fluoride and sealants, we provide personalized care in a calm, comfortable setting. Our comprehensive approach helps you maintain optimal oral health throughout your life while building lasting relationships with patients and their families.
Our practice features state-of-the-art diagnostic technology including digital X-rays that use significantly less radiation than traditional films. Our comfortable treatment rooms, friendly staff, and gentle techniques all contribute to stress-free visits. We also offer sedation options when needed to ensure even anxious patients can receive the preventive care they need.
We take time to explain what we’re doing during your preventive visits and why each step matters, whether your goals involve maintaining oral health or exploring cosmetic dentistry options. Whether it’s your first cleaning or your fiftieth, you’ll always understand what’s happening, what we find during exams, and what steps you can take at home to maintain excellent oral health. We believe informed patients make better decisions about their dental care.
Our preventive dentistry program includes everything you need to maintain healthy teeth and gums for patients of all ages, including pediatric dental care tailored to growing smiles. Regular professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar that brushing alone can’t eliminate, while thorough exams catch problems like cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer in their earliest, most treatable stages.
For patients with gum disease or periodontal concerns, we offer advanced laser therapy treatment. This modern approach to periodontal care uses precise laser technology to remove bacteria and infected tissue while promoting healing and regeneration of healthy gum tissue. Laser therapy is minimally invasive, typically more comfortable than traditional methods, and can help restore your gum health with less discomfort and faster recovery times.
Preventive care covers more ground than most patients expect. The CDC reports that untreated oral disease costs the U.S. nearly $46 billion in lost productivity each year, a reminder of how much is at stake when routine care is skipped. Each appointment is a chance to clean, examine, screen, and educate, giving us a complete picture of your oral health and a chance to address anything we find while it is still manageable. Our team takes its time with every patient, and we encourage questions at every stage of your visit.
Even the most diligent brushing and flossing routine cannot reach everything. Professional cleanings remove plaque and tartar buildup in areas only dental instruments can access, significantly reducing the risk of decay and gum disease. We combine each cleaning with a thorough exam, reviewing your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw for any signs of concern. Digital X-rays and our intraoral camera allow us to see the full picture with a level of detail that makes early detection far more reliable.
Not every cavity needs a drill. When decay is caught early, before it has progressed through the full depth of enamel, Curodont offers a non-invasive alternative to traditional restorative treatment. We use this technology as part of our broader commitment to preventive dentistry, helping patients stop damage before it reaches the point where fillings or crowns become necessary.
Curodont works by triggering the natural regeneration of hydroxyapatite, the mineral that gives enamel its strength, throughout the depth of an early carious lesion. A single application is all that is required. According to a 2025 in-vitro study published by the Dental Advisor, hydroxyapatite generation was observed throughout the lesion in as little as two weeks, with Micro CT evidence showing a statistically significant average increase of 15% in mineral density (p<0.001). This makes Curodont particularly well-suited for early interproximal and occlusal lesions that have not yet broken through to the inner enamel layer.
The key to benefiting from this technology is timing. Once a lesion becomes visible on an X-ray, it has already advanced past the stage where non-invasive restoration is an option. That is why regular exams, combined with tools like our Pearl AI diagnostic system, play such an important role in identifying decay at its earliest and most treatable stage.
Oral cancer is most treatable when detected early, and routine screenings give us the opportunity to catch warning signs before they develop into something more serious. We use VELscope technology, a light-based screening tool that helps identify abnormal tissue not visible to the naked eye. This quick, painless screening is included as part of your regular exam and provides meaningful peace of mind for patients who want comprehensive preventive care.
Not all dental damage comes from decay. Teeth grinding, jaw clenching, and sports injuries can cause significant wear and fractures over time. We provide custom-fitted night guards for patients dealing with bruxism or TMJ discomfort, and sport guards for athletes who need reliable protection during physical activity. Custom appliances fit better and offer more effective protection than over-the-counter alternatives, and we can fit patients of all ages.
Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and makes teeth more resistant to the acids produced by cavity-causing bacteria. We offer fluoride treatments for patients of all ages as a simple, fast, and effective preventive measure. For children and teens, dental sealants provide an added layer of protection by sealing the grooves of back teeth where food and bacteria commonly collect. Together, these two treatments form a strong foundation for cavity prevention in growing patients through our pediatric dentistry services.
For most patients, we recommend a professional cleaning and exam every six months. This schedule allows our team to monitor changes over time, address small issues before they grow, and keep your teeth and gums in strong condition year-round. Some patients with a higher risk of gum disease or decay may benefit from more frequent visits, which we will discuss with you based on your individual history.
Staying consistent with preventive care also plays an important role in protecting your broader health. Gum disease has been linked to systemic conditions, including heart disease and diabetes, and maintaining a healthy mouth supports your overall well-being. For patients who do need restorative dentistry or dental implants, strong preventive habits before and after treatment significantly improve long-term outcomes.
Cavities are one of the most common dental problems, but they’re also one of the easiest to treat when caught early. Regular preventive visits allow us to detect decay in its earliest stages, often before you experience any symptoms. When treatment is needed, we use modern tooth-colored composite fillings that blend naturally with your smile. These materials are durable, aesthetically pleasing, and mercury-free, making them a safer and more attractive choice compared to traditional metal fillings.
We use the latest digital diagnostic tools including intraoral cameras and digital X-rays to ensure precise diagnosis and early problem detection. Our technology allows us to catch issues other practices might miss, while minimizing radiation exposure and providing clear images you can see and understand.

Preventive care is the foundation of maintaining healthy teeth and gums for life, but many patients have questions about what’s included, how often to schedule appointments, and why certain treatments are recommended. Understanding the purpose behind preventive dentistry helps you make informed decisions about your oral health. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive about preventive care and how it protects your smile for years to come.
Most patients benefit from preventive dental visits every six months. These regular checkups allow us to monitor your oral health, remove plaque and tartar buildup, and catch problems early when they’re easiest and least expensive to treat. However, some patients with gum disease, high cavity risk, or other oral health concerns may need more frequent visits. We’ll recommend a schedule based on your individual needs.
No, we don’t take X-rays at every preventive visit. For most patients, we recommend bitewing X-rays once a year and a full set of X-rays every three to five years. However, if you have active dental problems, a history of frequent cavities, or gum disease, we may recommend more frequent imaging. We use digital X-rays that emit significantly less radiation than traditional films—up to 90% less exposure—and we only take X-rays when diagnostically necessary to detect problems that can’t be seen during a visual exam.
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above the gum line and is typically recommended every six months for patients with healthy gums. A deep cleaning (scaling and root planing) treats gum disease by removing plaque and tartar from below the gum line and smoothing root surfaces to help gums reattach to teeth. If we detect gum disease during your preventive visit, we’ll explain whether you need deep cleaning and why it’s important for restoring gum health. Deep cleanings may require local anesthesia and are usually completed in two appointments.
